If you enjoy reading a wide range of texts, not just Literature, and would like to develop your knowledge and understanding of English Language, as well as your skills of analysis and creative writing, then this course is a great option. We study an anthology of written and spoken texts, a novel (The Great Gatsby), a collection of poetry (Duffy’s Rapture)- and a play (Shakespeare’s Othello), as well as a wide range of supplementary texts. We also aim to develop your writing skills in a creative context. English language and Literature is a popular course and for a good reason! The course is varied, enjoyable and engaging and the skills you develop over the course will help you in any chosen career. Because of the strong focus on critical analysis and interpretation, as well as the focus on developing writing skills, this course has an excellent record of helping students succeed within both higher education and the workplace. During Year 12 you will begin studying the anthology, and start to get to grips with new terminology. You will also practice your creative writing skills and begin study of the novel and the poetry collection. Creative writing takes many forms and you will be introduced to a range of journalistic writing such as blogs and articles as well as fictional forms. In year 13 you will begin studying the play and undertake coursework which requires you to produce your own piece of creative writing and an analysis of two texts of your choice. This aspect of the course allows you to focus on your own particular areas of interest as you choose your own texts for study and your own coursework question. You also choose your own genre of creative writing so you get to study and produce texts that you genuinely enjoy while also becoming independent! You will learn techniques and technical terms associated with the analysis of English Language, applying them to a range of spoken and written texts.
Both internal and external pupils wishing to enter the sixth form will be expected to have met the same minimum academic entry requirements for the sixth form. This is a minimum of 3 GCSE grade 4s and grade 4 in English AND Maths.
