Course summary

The opportunities for students of Biology on completion of full time education are vast. There are many possible careers within the scientific world and qualifications in Science subjects are acceptable as an entry to many other careers. Former students have followed these career paths: Medicine, Forensic Science, Pharmacy, Medical Science, Biomechanical Engineering, Research, Nursing, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences. The Science courses offered at Walsall Academy are designed to provide academic and vocational experiences. They will prepare students for their choice of career in both the world of work and Higher Education. Each year there is a Biology field trip to Cannock Chase to study Biodiversity. We have many visiting speakers including ex-students advising on apprenticeship opportunities. UCAT preparation sessions are organised for those interested in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Sciences. Med Society Session 3 provides an opportunity for students interested in medicine to learn a range of skills that will help them in their career. University led careers workshops are provided each year. Session 3 exam preparation is offered for all students. Career focussed work placements are available on a regular basis or in a two week block.

Entry requirements

- 4 GCSEs (Grades 9 - 4) including English and Mathematics at a minimum of grade 5. - Grade 6-6 in GCSE Combined Science or Grade 6 in GCSE Biology - Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics and Grade 5 in GCSE English Language
