The Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science is a general qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly in the applied science sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and aims to give a coherent introduction to study of the applied science sector. Learners who wish to take this qualification will have completed a Level 2 programme of learning with GCSEs or vocational qualifications.
Students must have achieved a minimum of a Grade 4 GCSE in combined Science or Grade 4 in all three separate Sciences for entry on to this course.
Unit 1: External assessment a mixture of short and long answer based questions consisting of 3 papers - Biology, Chemistry & Physics. Unit 2: Internally assessed coursework element comprising of 4 assignments. Unit 3: External assessment involving section A practical assessment completed in the lab under exam conditions and section B an exam paper based on the data collected previously for section A which is sat in the hall under exam conditions. Both parts are sat within a window set by the exam board. Unit 8: Internally assessed coursework element comprising 3 assignments.
