Highlights of the course include: • The opportunity to learn to manage and ride the College's wide variety of well schooled horses under tuition by our experienced tutors, many of whom are BHS qualified and post-graduates • Trips and visits may be included, such as: Horse of the Year Show, Badminton Horse Trials and a visit to the Races • Visiting speakers may be invited such as Equine nutritionists, Equine welfare charities and Equine apprenticeship careers advisors This course is delivered as two qualifications, each a year long (usually a national or 90 credit diploma in Year 1 and the extended diploma in Year 2). Students who are 18 years old when they start Year 1 will therefore be 19 at the start of Year 2 and may be subject to fees for the Year 2 qualification. All learners will need to successfully complete the Year 1 qualification to be able to progress to the Year 2 qualification.
Five GCSE at grade 4 or above including English Language, maths and Science. You will also need to be capable of handling and/or riding a variety of horses. If assessed as competent to undertake the riding unit you will need to be confident in walk, trot and canter. It is essential that students have an up-to-date tetanus vaccination. Students must also be within the maximum riding weight limit of 14 stone (with saddle and bridle).
The qualification is assessed using a variety of methods to include external examinations, practical assessments and written assignments. All students will undertake at least 2 sessions of yard duties each week which is mandatory and also forms part of the qualification's assessment process. 150 hours of external work experience is also required each year as part of the qualification's assessment process.
