Course summary

The course builds on the foundations created through following the A level Mathematics course. Year 12 (AS) - 50% of the course covers the first year of the full A level, extending skills and knowledge in Pure Mathematics. New areas of Pure mathematics will be introduced such as complex numbers, matrices and further methods of mathematical proof. The course also extends skills covered in mathematics in the fields of vectors, calculus and functions. The remaining 50% of the course is selected from a set of options in Applied Mathematics either Further statistics or Further Mechanics which will extend skills from the mathematics course. Year 13 (A2) - The second year of study will build on knowledge of Pure Mathematics covering topics such as complex numbers, further algebra and functions, further calculus, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations. A further option must also be studied from Applied Mathematics which should be the option of Further Statistics or Further Mechanics, whichever was not studied in Year 12. This information has been prepared using the draft specification for Further Mathematics which has not yet been approved and as such may be subject to change.
