The EDEXCEL qualification covers Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics. In year 12 (AS) Pure Mathematics introduces analytical and logical processes and a range of problem solving techniques including a high level of competence in algebraic manipulation. Topics studied include: Mathematical proof, geometry, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, calculus and vectors. In Statistics topics include: statistical sampling, presenting and analysing date, modelling data using statistical distributions and statistical hypothesis testing. In Mechanics topics include: kinematics, forces and Newton's laws of motion. In Year 13 (A2) the course builds on the AS level content in the three main areas. In Pure Mathematics - emphasis is on advancing skills in trigonometry and calculus with the introduction of sequences and series and numerical methods for solving equations. The solution of differential equations is introduced and working with three-dimensional vectors.
5 GCSE’s at grade 5+ (or Merit+ in equivalents). If the 5 passes does not include English (language or literature) and mathematics of grade 5+, students must, in addition, achieve at least a grade 4 in English (language or literature) and mathematics. In addition, a grade 7 or above in Maths GCSE.
Three examinations - Two on Pure Mathematics and one on Applied (Statistics and Mechanics).
