English Language
Course summary
This is a course for those who take a delight in the English Language and its uses; for those who wish to explore and analyse language systems; for those who wish to discover how and why language works. The course aims to encourage students to develop their interest and enjoyment in English through learning more about: the structures and functions of the language, attitudes to current language topics, including language acquisition, accents and dialects and political correctness, and by drawing on their own experience and knowledge of language change and variation. An additional key feature of the new AQA specification we follow is the study of how different social groups are represented linguistically. In addition, students also produce their own creative and functional writing and analyse their own language choices. Students will develop analytical skills through the exploration of a wide range of material, both spoken and written. The course is underpinned by four key frameworks: Lexis, Grammar, Semantics and Phonology.
