Course summary

Chemistry is a fascinating subject which provides us with an understanding of how the world around us works! We can create new substances to fight disease, to feed the world’s population, to solve the energy crisis, to combat climate change, to provide new materials to improve the quality of life and potentially, to explain life itself. It is the study of the nature of matter - how and why things are and how we can use them. You will find out about baby lotion, medicines, future fuels for transport, pH control in blood, analysing substances, environmental chemistry and solving the world’s energy problems. If you enjoy thinking, problem solving, practical activities and finding out about the universe, this course will suit you! The course includes a wide range of topics relating Chemistry to the world around us, extending the work done at GCSE, studying new topics and answering some fundamental questions. Chemistry is essentially a practical subject and you will have many opportunities to experience a wide range of processes and techniques including quantitative analysis and synthesis of compounds.
