Mathematics (Further)
Course summary
Students who are especially keen on Mathematics and found GCSE easy, will really enjoy taking "Double Maths". Further Mathematics is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens students’ knowledge and understanding beyond the standard Mathematics course. This course has twice the amount of teaching time as Single Mathematics, as the course covers two A Levels. It is particularly suitable for students who are interested in Mathematics, Computing, Physics, Engineering or Economics and who are considering applying to a top university for one of these subjects. The course covers the same topics as the single mathematics course but does so in considerably more depth and the skills that are so developed are highly valued by top universities. Students taking Further Mathematics find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating and empowering experience. It provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts as well as enabling students to distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in the university and employment market. Two-thirds of Further Maths content is Pure Maths which will introduce new topics such as matrices, differential equations, complex numbers and hyperbolic functions as well as extending the calculus and algebraic topics encountered in the Mathematics A-level course. The remaining third is split between further study of both Mechanics and Statistics.
