Course summary

Initially, you will study the main approaches in Psychology, and biopsychology in particular, to gain a grounded foundation in the subject from considering conflicting and complementary explanations of behaviour. You will also study memory, attachment, social influence, psychopathology and research methods in the first year. A series of short and manageable practical experiments and tests accompany the areas of the syllabus and allow students to develop an active knowledge of the scientific aspects of Psychology. In the second year you will develop your understanding of Psychology, its uses and scientific methodology through selection of a choice of applications including forensic psychology, schizophrenia and cognitive development. Within these, you will carry out a range of practicals and small class tests. Year One: – Introductory topics in Psychology – Social influence, memory, attachment and psychopathology – Psychology in context – Approaches in psychology, biopsychology and research methods Year Two: – Psychology in context – Approaches in psychology and research methods – Issues and Options in Psychology – Issues and debates, cognition and development, schizophrenia and forensic psychology

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include English Language, Mathematics and Science.

How you'll be assessed

Examination at the end of year two.
