The Mathematics A Level course covers Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The syllabus is divided in a simple 2:1 ratio of pure to applied content. The Pure Mathematics elements of the course include algebra, geometry, calculus, series and trigonometry. The Applied Mathematics elements are split between Statistics and Mechanics. Statistics is the study of the collection, presentation and analysis of data. Mechanics is a study of the mathematics of movement, including Newton's laws of motions, the formulae concerned with acceleration, velocity and displacement, vectors and force diagrams. It will be examined through three examination papers at the end of Year 13. There will be two Pure Mathematics papers and one Applied Mathematics paper.
General entry minimum requirements to study three Level 3 qualifications for Hillview Sixth Form are Grade 4 in both English Language and Maths together with 3 other GCSE grades at Grade 4 or above. Students will also need to meet subject specific criteria which for Maths is, Grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics Higher paper. An APS of 5.5 or above.
