Course summary

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business is for students who are interested in learning about the business sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in business-related subjects. It is designed to be taken as part of a program of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels. The course requires applied learning that brings together knowledge and understanding with practical and technical skills. This is achieved through learners performing vocational tasks that encourage the development of appropriate vocational behaviors and transferable skills; communication, teamwork, research, and analysis, which are valued in both higher education and the workplace. The proportion of mandatory content ensures that all students are following a coherent program of study and acquiring the knowledge, understanding, and skills that will be recognized and valued. This two-year course offers students a chance to explore a range of key business areas all within a vocational context. They will sit a two-hour written exam (Unit 3) exploring Personal and Business Finance as well as Developing a Marketing Campaign (Unit 2) in response to a case study to be completed under supervised conditions. These two externally assessed units, completed in Year 13, are set and marked by the exam board. Students will also spend time Exploring Business (Unit 1) and completing Work Experience in Business (Unit 27). Both these units are internally assessed.
