Course summary

This course addresses many of the challenging issues facing the world today and is an engaging subject for those who enjoy exploring a wide diversity of topics, places and global issues. Be ready to question the world as you know it. Units include: • tectonic hazards • globalisation • the carbon and water cycles (can life exist without carbon?) • urban and rural places • global variations in health, human rights and conflict • coastal landscapes • superpowers (countries with changing political influence) No two days in the world are the same, and in geography we help you to understand and question this through the development of your knowledge and skills. As the subject is so wide-ranging, and develops high transferable skills, it is very attractive to future employers. Geography is also a facilitating subject, meaning it is highly valued by the top universities in the country. You will study a combination of physical and human geography. You will engage with a broad range of current issues at a range of scales, thereby deepening your knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live. Four days of fieldwork in human and physical geography is a compulsory part of the course, often as a residential in Dorset. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of residential visits that enhance your study of geography. Previous trips have included Iceland, Rome, Berlin and Poland.
