Studying the Philosophy and Ethics components will help you to acquire the ability to think logically, to analyse issues and to express yourself and your ideas clearly. Such powers of reasoning and expression are highly valued by employers and Higher Education institutions. The Islamic Studies elements will help you examine a wide variety of beliefs in the light of our multicultural society. Unit 1: The Study of Religion In the first year, topics will include pre-Islamic Arabian religion and society and key Islamic beliefs and practices. You will also study religious figures and sacred texts in Islam and social and historical developments. Unit 2: Philosophy of Religion You will study arguments for the existence of God, the problem of evil and suffering and religious experience. Second year topics will include religious language, atheism and challenges to religious belief. Unit 3: Religion and Ethics This includes a study of ethical theories and their application to contemporary moral issues, including medical ethics, sexual ethics and the issue of war and peace.
