This qualification is designed to help learners produce a broad range of foundation skills and knowledge in the Performing Arts. The BTEC course allows learners to tailor their programme of learning to their interests through a wide range of units focusing on Dance, Drama or the combination of both and is equivalent to one A Level. The course is made up of compulsory units such as Investigating Practitioners work, Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance, and Group Performance Workshop, and optional unit studies including, Jazz, Street Dance Technique, Acting Styles, and Developing Voice for Performance. Those students wishing to focus on Dance will learn new dance styles such as Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Contemporary. During technique classes, students will learn to apply performance skills, learn original repertoire from professional works and explore the use of choreographic devices. Drama students will cover a wide range of theatrical styles through periods ranging from Greek theatre, commedia dell’arte and Shakespeare. Students will also learn about the Performing Arts business, such as managing Front of House or creating a lighting design for a performance. Learners will learn how to create a professional CV and gain experience on working in the industry. Opportunities to watch practical work from professional performers, as well as trips to see live theatre / musical / dance performance are also highlights of the two years.
