Course summary

Students will study for 3 examined units. The fourth unit is an independent research project. Unit 1: Topics covered in this examination are Tectonic Processes and Hazards, Coastal Landscapes and Change and The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security. The examination may include short open, open response and resource-linked questions. The examination includes 12 mark and 20 mark extended writing questions. Calculators may be used. Unit 2: Topics covered in this examination are Globalisation, Diverse Places and Health, Human Rights and Intervention. The examination may include short open, open response and resource-linked questions. The examination includes 12 mark and 20 mark extended writing questions. Calculators may be used. Unit 3: The specification contains three synoptic themes within the compulsory1 content areas: • Players • Attitudes and actions • Futures and uncertainties The synoptic investigation will be based on a geographical issue within a place-based context that links to the three synoptic themes and is rooted in two or more of the compulsory content areas. Unit 4 Independent Investigation Students define a question or issue for investigation, relating to the compulsory or optional content. The topic may relate to any aspect of Geography contained within the specification. The student’s investigation will incorporate fieldwork data (collected individually or as part of a group) and own research and/or secondary data. The fieldwork, which forms the focus and context of the individual investigation, may be human, physical or integrated physical-human. The investigation will take the form of a piece of coursework between 3000-4000 words and will be completed in year 13.

Entry requirements

6 in a Humanities subject (Geography, History, Sociology or RE) OR a 6 in English Language.

How you'll be assessed

Paper 1 (physical) is a written exam (2 hours and 15 minutes). Weighting = 30% of A Level marks. Paper 2 (human) is a written exam (2 hours and 15 minutes). Weighting = 30% of A Level marks. Paper 3 (synoptic) is a written exam (2 hours 15 minutes). Weighting = 20% of A Level marks. Unit 4 is coursework – an Independent Investigation. Weighting = 20% of A Level marks.
