Explore the relationship between law, society and the individual. This course is excellent preparation for a wide range of university courses and careers. You will study both the theory and application of Criminal Law. You will become an independent learner developing analytical, problem-solving and communication skills. What you will study ● The English legal system looks at how law is made, who can make law and how judges interpret statutes. ● The role of legal personnel including barristers and solicitors as well as the role lay people have in the law (i.e. juries and magistrates). ● The theory and application of criminal law look at fatal, non-fatal and property offences as well as capacity and necessity defences. ● Tort law studies liability in negligence for injury to people and damage to property, occupiers’ liability, and vicarious liability and you will consider any defences. ● The law of contract.
5 x grade 5s or above at GCSE or equivalent. Grade 5 in GCSE English Language.
Three examinations at the end of year two: ● Criminal Law ● Tort Law ● Contract Law Each paper includes a section on the English legal system. Students need good analytical skills and the ability to write detailed essays.
