This course is designed to meet the needs of those looking to pursue a career in the fields of Biomedical Science or Forensic Science. The qualification is wide-ranging and equivalent to three A Levels. It has been designed as a two-year, full-time program of study. However, after 1 year you are able to obtain a Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Applied Science. The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science includes a range of practical laboratory experience and academic study. To assist students in their studies and understanding of science in the wider world this course includes talks from industry professionals and visits to places of scientific interest and industry. You will develop the analytical, evaluative, and technical skills to work within a wide range of scientific industries or to be able to progress to Higher Education level. All 16–18-year-olds are required to complete a minimum of 1 week’s work placement (35 hours) * at a time agreed by your department head. *Exact number of hours required will depend on the level of course you are enrolled in. The course has been broken down into a two-year course studying the following units: Year 1 • Principles and Applications of Science I • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques • Science Investigation Skills • Laboratory Techniques and their Application • Physiology of Human Body Systems • Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways Year 2 • Principles and Applications of Science II • Investigative Project • Contemporary Issues in Science • Applications of Organic Chemistry • Diseases and Infections • Medical Physics Applications • Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis
5 GCSE grade 9-4 (A*-C) that include English, Maths & Science; or BTEC NQF Level 2 Extended Certificate/BTEC QCF. Level 2 Diploma Merit/Distinction and GCSE grade 9-4 (A*-C) in English, Maths and Science.
You will be assessed through coursework; practical and external assessments plus a written examination. Assignments will include case studies, written reports, projects, performance observation, and time-constrained assessments all with a practical biomedical science theme.
