Course summary

Physics presents a content-led, flexible approach where the specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts. As you progress through the course you will build on your knowledge of the laws of physics and topics ranging from sub-atomic particles to the entire universe. Making observations enables you to understand the interactions between quantities in physics, so practical work is an important part of the course. You will learn about the importance of the estimation of physical quantities and appreciate the limitations of measurements. The A Level specification covers the development of practical skills in physics, foundations of physics, forces and motion, electrons – waves, and photons. The practical endorsement will also support the development of practical skills throughout the course. During your two years of study, you will undertake a work placement. You will also hear from a variety of industry speakers, visit career fairs, and attend workshops, trips, and visits.

Entry requirements

To study a standard A Level programme (three A Levels) you must have a minimum of five GCSEs grade 4 and above including English and Maths. Requires GCSEs in maths at grade 6 and combined science or physics at double grade 6, plus the standard entry requirements of an A Level or mixed programme. Students are advised to take A Level maths if taking A Level physics.

How you'll be assessed

There are three externally assessed examinations at the end of the two-year course. There is no coursework. The practical endorsement component will be reported separately from the performance in the A Level exams.
