British History from the late 18th to early 20th centuries, and European and World History in the 20th Century. The British breadth study looks at the evolution of British democracy 1780-1928. The study of 20th-century Germany and Spain considers how each nation saw democracy vanquished by right-wing dictatorships and then subsequently regained. The economic and social development of Germany and Spain are studied in as much depth as their political evolution. You will learn the skills of extended analytical essay writing, primary source analysis, and the evaluation of historical interpretation, as well as research, debating, and presentation skills. You will complete an independent coursework assignment on the historical debate surrounding the Origins of the Cold War 1945-53.
For a mixed programme of A Levels and BTEC Level 3 courses you must have five GCSEs grade 4 and above which could include one BTEC and either GCSE English or Maths as appropriate for your chosen courses. Requires GCSEs in English language at grade 5 and history at grade 5 if taken, plus the standard entry requirements of an A Level or mixed program.
At the end of this two-year course you will sit three written examinations: Paper 1 – Two hours and 15 minutes – Three essays. Paper 2 – One hour and 30 minutes – Two essays. Paper 3 – Two hours and 15 minutes – Three essays. The coursework module comprises a 4,000-word independently researched assignment, which is completed by January of your second year of study.
