In the first year of study, students will produce a portfolio of design units in order to build up skills and a knowledge base for designing in a range of formats. These include: managing a client brief, developing and realising creative intentions, professional practice in Design that includes Graphic Design, 3D materials, techniques and processes. Students will have links to the creative industry, through a range of units through guest speakers, visits and creative industry led projects. In the second year of study, students will build up a portfolio of units based on specialist design aspects linked to areas of specific interest to them. The units can be based around design and could include Jewellery, Interior and Architectural design, Product Design and Graphics. Each student will complete a range of units, which can link to their chosen specialist area. Students will also develop skills in preparing themselves and their portfolio for interviews and freelance work for career progression into Design related career paths.
You must have obtained a grade 4 in GCSE English Language or English Literature, plus four further higher grade passes (this includes grade 4 or above in GCSE subjects or Level 2 Pass or above in BTEC subjects). However, consideration will be given to students who have obtained a grade 3 in English Language plus four further higher grade passes.
The whole course is assessed through unit assignments. Over two years you will complete 5 units which are internally assessed and 3 which are externally assessed. Each assignment will require you to carry out a variety of tasks and a broad range of assessment techniques are used, for example: presentations, displays and reports.
