You will develop an advanced level knowledge and understanding of the French language, the culture of France and other French-speaking countries, as well as practical and valuable language and transferable study skills. The Pearson Edexcel A Level in French has been developed to inspire all students who have an appreciation of the language, literature, film and culture of the French-speaking world. This specification will help to prepare students for higher education and enhance their employability profile. The qualification features familiar and popular themes as well as some new content that provides clear links to some of the most fundamental and interesting aspects of the culture of the target language country and communities. You will study popular literary texts and films including contemporary and more classical titles. The assessments place an emphasis on spontaneity and grammar, as well as providing plenty of opportunities for students to apply their knowledge independently and creatively. The A Level has four main Themes – Les changements dans la société française (Development of French society), La culture politique et artistique dans les pays francophones (political and artistic culture of the French-speaking world), L’Immigration et la société multiculturelle française (immigration and multicultural French society), and L’Occupation et la Résistance (occupation and the resistance); to be studied alongside one literary text and one film. The content of the A Level builds on the understanding developed at Key Stage 4 and gives students the opportunity to learn and apply important transferable skills in critical thinking and analysis, enabling them to make a smooth transition to the next level of study.
5 GCSE grades at 4 or above including a grade 4 in English and preferably a 6 in French, although grade 5 may be accepted after discussion with the MFL department.
The four main themes are assessed through two externally examined papers and one non-exam assessment (oral).
