Course summary

Sociology is a subject that requires you to develop a critical view of the society around you, questioning assumptions taken for granted and applying theoretical analysis to back up arguments. During the course we study key sociological theories, perspectives and methods. You will look at how factors such as social class, ethnicity and gender impact on experiences of family life and the sociological explanations of why some groups achieve more in education than others. We critically look at crime and the way in which some groups within society are over-represented in crime statistics, alongside the role of punishment and crime prevention. In addition, you will also look at beliefs in society and the role that religion and beliefs take, analysing the extent to which religion still plays a part in contemporary society.
