Course summary

• Geography is the study of the Earth’s landscapes, people and places. It recognises the great differences in cultures, political systems, economies, and environments across the world and the links between them. • The course includes a wide variety of topics, some sections will build on GCSE knowledge but others will be new to all learners. The modules you will study are: 1. Globalisation – the interconnected nature of our world including business, environmental and cultural factors. The influence of TNCs, governments and trade blocs. 2. Regeneration – change in places at different scales driven by economic and social variations. Movements of people, capital, information and resources making some places economically dynamic while other places appear to be marginalised. 3. Plate tectonics – Tectonic hazards – earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and secondary hazards such as tsunamis represent a significant risk in some parts of the world. 4. Glaciation – how ice sheets and glaciers operate within a landscape, how they are changed and are under threat. 5. The water cycle – how water supports life on earth including the global issue of increasing water insecurity. 6. The carbon cycle – understanding the movement of carbon through different stores and the impact this has on life today e.g. human induced climate change. 7. Superpowers – the impact of a small group of influential countries on the global economy, global politics and the environment. 8. Health and human rights – investigating issues relating to environmental, social and political quality of life. Geopolitical interventions on human health and wellbeing. • In Year 12 students will take part in a 5 day residential field trip to Snowdonia, Wales. This will be used to prepare them for the Independent Investigation element of the course (worth 20% of the A level). In Year13 students also visit London for a day of fieldwork.

Entry requirements

- Minimum prior attainment which must be achieved to enrol on this course: APS of 5.5 including a minimum of Grade 6 in Geography at GCSE - Best 8 APS of 5.5+, including grade 5 in GCSE English & Maths. If you have studied a subject at GCSE and wish to study it at A Level, a minimum of a grade 5 pass is required.
