Course summary

You will study a broad range of periods, from the 16th century, through to the end of the 20th century. In particular,you will look at the how democracies have changed in the 20th century. You will be studying primarily the history of Britain and America, by looking at diverse periods of time, from the Tudors, through to the 1990, covering the impact of World War I and 2 on Britain and the changes under Reagan and Thatcher in the 1980s. You will study the role of significant individuals such as Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, John F. Kennedy, Malcom X and Margaret Thatcher, as well as the parts played by ordinary citizens. You will study aspects of political history, economic history and social history Topic 1: Britain transformed, 1918–97 (30%) This topic comprises a study in breadth, in which you will learn about the extent to which Britain was transformed politically, socially, economically and culturally in the years 1918– 79. There is also a study in depth of historical interpretations: what impact Thatcher’s governments had on Britain, 1979–97 Topic 2: The USA, 1955-92: conformity and challenge (20%) This topic comprises a study in depth of the USA in the years 1955–92, from post1945 affluence, through racial and political protests in the 1960s, to the rise of right-wing groups in the 1980s and the development of bitter divisions between Democrats and Republicans. You will gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges posed to the American political system by popular protests and different styles of leadership, and the effects on society of widespread economic, social and cultural change. Topic 3: Rebellion and disorder under the Tudors, 1485–1603 (30%) This topic comprises two parts: the Aspects in breadth focus on long-term changes and contextualise the Aspects in depth, which focus in detail on key episodes. Together, the breadth and depth topics explore the nature of rebellion and disorder under the Tudors and the way the various challenges were met, the nature of change in government over the period and the changing relationship between the Crown and key sections of society. The unit enables you to explore the way in which, despite a shaky start, the Tudors were able to establish their dynasty as one of the most powerful England has had.

Entry requirements

- Minimum prior attainment which must be achieved to enrol on this course: APS 5.5 including grade 6 or above at GCSE in English and/or grade 6 in History. It is possible to study A Level History without studying GCSE History - Best 8 APS of 5.5+, including grade 5 in GCSE English & Maths. If you have studied a subject at GCSE and wish to study it at A Level, a minimum of a grade 5 pass is required.
