Course summary

• ‘The Turn of the Screw’ by Henry James (introductory text linked to the induction task). Students will develop their knowledge of the characters, themes and plot of the novella as well as their understanding of relevant 19th century contexts. • Post-2000 poetry anthology (set text). Students will develop their knowledge of key themes in the poems along with consolidating their knowledge of key poetic terms. • ‘Othello’ by William Shakespeare (set text). Students will develop their knowledge of the characters, themes and plot of the play as well as their understanding of key Jacobean contexts. They will develop their understanding of the dramatic form and their understanding of tragedy. • ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley (set text). Students will develop their knowledge of the characters, themes and plot of the novel as well as their understanding of key social, historical and cultural contexts of the 18th and 19th centuries. • The Modernist poetry anthology (set text). Students will develop their knowledge of key themes in the poems and their knowledge of key poetic terms. They will also learn about the key contexts of the Modernist era.
