Course summary

Year 12 covers the fundamental principles that are the basis of Chemistry. Familiar ideas are taken from GCSE and extended on – including atomic structure, bonding, and chemical calculations. Organic Chemistry is also studied in detail and the analysis of compounds will also be investigated. You will carry out various practical activities that will assess your skills. In Year 13 the course develops the concepts of physical chemistry introduced in Year 12. Kinetics and equilibria are both looked at in greater detail. Acids, bases, and buffer solutions and the changes in pH during titrations are also considered. The study of Organic Chemistry is extended to include compounds containing the carbonyl group, aromatic compounds, amines, amino acids, and polymers. How spectroscopic techniques are used to determine the molecular formulae and structures of organic compounds is also looked at. As in year 12, you will also be assessed on practical skills and investigative skills.

Entry requirements

At least five Grade 4 or above at GCSE or equivalent, including at least Grade 6-6 in Combined Science, or Grade 6 in Chemistry and Grade 6 in Biology and/or Physics, plus Grade 5 in Maths.

How you'll be assessed

There are 3 examinations in Year 13. Paper 1 and paper 2 are worth 35% each and are 2 hours in length. They test inorganic, physical and organic chemistry. Paper 3 is still 2 hours in length but is worth 30% of the overall grade. This tests more of the practical components but also has a synoptic element to it.
