The Art and Design A Level course is exciting, diverse and challenging. Emphasis is placed upon individual learning, creativity and personal responses. During this course, students will be given the chance to work within a wide range of specialisms, including fine art, drawing, painting, photography and digital art. A levelArt and Design encourages students to consider the visual exploration of ideas, meanings and feelings at a personal level and in the wider context of their social, historical and cultural connections. The area of study is broad to enable students to explore and develop their understanding of the formal elements in a variety of media. Students endeavour to work independently and have the freedom to develop and communicate meaning through their exploration and experimentation. They are expected to research thoroughly to develop informed opinions and critical judgements about their work and that of other artists.
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above. In addition, GCSE grade 5 in Art or a recommendation from the head of the department.
Emphasis will be on understanding, experimentation, and development of ideas. Starting with the ‘Purpose of Drawing’, students are guided through a series of processes, techniques, and concepts before starting their independent inquiry. A formal assessment will take place at the end of Year 13. Formal assessment will take place at the end of each year. Practical 5-hour mock exam in year 12 and controlled 15-hour exam in year 13. Overall grade is based on 60% coursework and 40% external set exam.
