Course summary

Sociology is the study of society. It looks at how the society around us shapes who we are, how we act and why we behave the way that we do. For example, why is it that males are more likely to be found guilty of a criminal offence than women? And why are they more likely to get a harsher punishment? People are affected by their background factors such as class, gender and ethnicity. Belonging to these social groups can determine what kind of career you do, where you live or even how long you might live. Through the course, you will develop an awareness of the social, political and historical factors that shape the society we live in. You will also develop the skills to read and analyse studies, to assess arguments as well as reaching balanced conclusions. As well as studying sociological theories and research techniques, you will study topics such as education, crime and religion.
