Course summary

This qualification gives students specialist knowledge and skills, enabling entry to an apprenticeship or other employment, or progression to related further education and higher education courses. Many students have progressed onto the Foundation Courses at UCA, others have gained places at various universities including Epsom to study Fashion Journalism, Southampton to study Graphic Design, Brighton to study Illustration, Farnham UCA to study Computer Games Art. The Art department offers A’ Level Art, Craft & Design by AQA. This course allows you to study a range of medias, techniques and artist styles allowing you to freely develop your personal interest.

Entry requirements

• Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (or equivalent) including Grade 5 in Art or Photography. (Grade 4 may be considered). • An aptitude for and an interest in art. • Possible career aspirations that are linked to art/media/fashion/advertising/architecture/ interior design/stylist etc. • A creative love and independent learning skills.

How you'll be assessed

The A Level course is 100% practical, it is made up of 2 components: Coursework 60% - A personal investigation chosen by you based on a theme or style of art which you like. In year 12 you will start the course by experimenting and exploring possible ideas which will enable you to confidently complete this extended project. You will be inspired by appropriate artists and create several final outcomes. You will develop your artist skills from GCSE/BTEC and become a far more independent, creative artist. In year 13 you will also be required to write a 1-3000 word essay which is based on your theme.
