First year: Students cover atomic structure and bonding, kinetics, energy changes, redox reactions, periodicity and groups 2 and 7. They also look at naming organic compounds, alkanes, alkenes, haloalkanes and alcohols. Second year: Students cover kinetics and thermodynamics in more depth. They also meet equilibria and pH, transition metals, carbonyl compounds, aromatic compounds, amines and amino acids and organic structure determination. Units covered: The two years of the course each contain units on physical, inorganic and organic chemistry.
Chemistry is examined as follows: Paper 1: Written exam taken in Summer of Year 13 (short and long answer questions). Duration: 2 hours Weighting: 105 marks - 35% of A Level Paper 2: Written exam taken in Summer of Year 13 (short and long answer questions). Duration: 2 hours Weighting: 105 marks - 35% of A Level Paper 3: Written exam taken in Summer of Year 13. Any content / Any practical skills • 40 marks of questions on practical techniques and data analysis • 20 marks of questions testing across the specification • 30 marks of multiple choice questions Duration: 2 hours Weighting: 90 marks - 30% of A Level
