Course summary

Biology is the scientific study of life and is a diverse subject, studying living things at various levels, from the tiniest of cells and organisms to entire ecosystems. A-Level biology is a subject that combines theoretical and practical understanding with analytical skills. It is a dynamic field of study with cutting-edge science that is changing our understanding of the way living things work as well as solving global issues. Being a STEM subject, it shows employers and universities that you have strong scientific and academic capabilities. Taking A Level biology will give you access to many degree courses and careers. WHAT WILL I STUDY The specification content is divided into five teaching modules and each module is further divided into key topics, with practical skills woven throughout. Module 2 - foundations in biology Module 3 - exchange and transport Module 4 - biodiversity, evolution and disease Module 5 - communication, homeostasis and energy Module 6 - genetics, evolution and ecosystems WHERE CAN BIOLOGY LEAD? Science careers directly related to biology include medical professions, dentistry, veterinary, pharmacy, physiotherapy, biomedical engineering, research science (life sciences), microbiology, marine biology, conservation, ecology, environmental management, food science, agricultural engineering, zoology and sport and fitness. The transferable skills developed would also be useful in a diverse range of careers including: law, business analysis, psychology (biology is a requirement for some psychology degrees).

Entry requirements

To study A Levels you will need to have achieved 5 grade 5s or better at GCSE (as well as achieving at least grade 4 in GCSE English and mathematics). Standard entry requirements plus a minimum of grade 6 in GCSE Biology or Combined Science.

How you'll be assessed

This is a two-year course with all exams taking place at the end of Year 13. Biology processes (01) 100 marks. 2 hour 15 minutes written paper. 37% of the total mark. Biological diversity (02) 100 marks. 2 hour 15 minutes written paper. 37% of the total mark. Unified Biology (03) 70 marks. 1 hour 30 minutes written paper. 26% of the total mark.
