Course summary
Studying Core Maths will help you develop your quantitive and problem solving skills. The qualification has been designed with employers, universities and professional bodies to make you more employable. It will also support other A level subjects, especially science, geography, business studies, psychology and economics if you are not doing A level maths and secured grade 4 (or more) at GCSE. This course is all about how maths is used in real life. It contains many things you have learned in previous years, but focusing on why they are important. For example, percentages are vital because you need to work out tax, insurance, mortgages etc. The first section of the course is compulsory and focuses on data, finance and estimation. The second section has three options to choose from. Options will be decided by the group depending on relevance to the other subjects being studied. The options are: • Statistical techniques (supports sciences and humanities) • Critical Path and Risk Analysis (particularly useful for Business) • Graphical Techniques (supports the sciences)
