Course summary

Further Mathematics is an intensive course that is ideal for the student who really enjoys Mathematics. It is studied alongside A Level Mathematics but will expose you to a broader application of the subject. You must have very strong mathematical skills and be willing to work hard to master a wide range of rigorous methods. Further Mathematics can be applied in many disciplines. Students taking this A level have gone on to study engineering, computer science, economics, physics and mathematics at degree level. This is a linear course run over two years. The course consists of pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics: Pure mathematics (50% of the course) – Complex numbers – Proof – 3D Vectors – Matrices – Second order differential equations – Polar coordinates Statistics (25% of the course) – Combinatorics – Discrete and continuous distributions – Advanced probability – Further hypothesis testing (chi-squared, Spearman’s rank) Mechanics (25% of the course) – Newton’s law of restitution – Dimensional analysis – Circular motion – Centres of mass – Work, energy & power

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language. You must also have a grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics. This course must be studied alongside A Level Mathematics.

How you'll be assessed

You will sit four exams at the end of the two-year course: two 90-minute exams on the pure mathematics content and two 90-minute exams on the applied mathematics content.
