The experienced and enthusiastic chemistry staff at Wyedean are committed to delivering an interesting and inspiring course for students aimed at: ▪ Developing their interest in, and enthusiasm for chemistry, including developing an interest in further study and careers in chemistry. ▪ Developing essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of chemistry and how they relate to each other. ▪ Appreciating how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how chemistry contributes to the success of the economy and society. ▪ Developing and demonstrating a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge, and understanding of “How Science Works”. An A level in Chemistry can lead on to a wide variety of university degree courses. Chemistry is used in the energy industry, analysis, environmental sciences, biochemistry, and biotechnology, to name only a few. It is a popular A-level for the medical sciences.
Five GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English and Maths. Grade 7/A in GCSE Chemistry, grade 76/AB in GCSE Combined Science with strong grades in the chemistry papers. Grade 6 in maths.
There are three exams; two 2-hour 15 15-minute papers: inorganic and organic. One unified paper 1 hour 30 mins. Throughout the two-year course, 12 specific exam board practical assessment tasks are compulsory. These are internally assessed against a criteria of skills.
