Course summary

A Level of Media Studies offers you the opportunity to develop a thorough understanding of key issues related to the media. You will learn to apply a variety of advanced theoretical approaches to support a wide range of rich and stimulating media products and will be offered opportunities for detailed analysis of how the media communicates meanings in a variety of forms. You will debate key critical questions related to the social, cultural, political, and economic role of the media. You will consider established media forms alongside more contemporary forms, developing an awareness of emerging and evolving media. You will have opportunities to develop media production skills in different forms and become creators of meaning. You will study a range of media forms - advertising and marketing, film, magazines, music videos, newspapers, online media, radio, television, and video games.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English and Maths. It is recommended that students achieve grade 6/B in GCSE English Language or English Literature.

How you'll be assessed

You will study 3 Components: Component 1 - Written examination - 2 hours 15 minutes, Component 2 - Written examination - 2 hours 30 minutes, Component 3 - Internally assessed and externally moderated. Component 1: In this component. you will develop knowledge and understanding of key aspects of the theoretical framework - media language and representation - as an essential basis for analyzing media products from a variety of forms. You will study products from specific media industries and for specific audiences to develop your understanding of those areas of the theoretical framework. You will also explore how media products relate to their social, cultural, historical, political, and economic contexts. You will develop your ability to use relevant subject-specific terminology and theories. You will study Newspapers, Advertising and Marketing, Music videos, Radio, Video games, and Film (cross-media study, including film marketing). Component 2: In this component you will develop your knowledge and understanding of key aspects of media industries, including the significance of ownership and funding, the role of regulation in global production and distribution, the impact of digitally convergent platforms, and the effect of individual producers on media industries. You will also study media audiences, covering aspects such as the targeting of mass and specialized audiences, the categorization and construction of audiences, as well as the audience's responses to the media; reflecting the identity and social, cultural, and historical circumstances. Component 3: You will apply your knowledge and understanding of the media to practical production. You will create an individual production for an intended audience in response to a choice of briefs set by the WJEC. The following media forms will always be set: Television, Advertising and Marketing: Music, Advertising and Marketing: Film, Magazines.
