Course summary

What will I study during my A level? Three modules must be studied throughout the course. ‘Religion and Ethics,’ Philosophy of Religion’ and ‘A Study of Religion.’ Religion and Ethics Ethical Theory Students will be introduced to ethical language and thought. Students will be expected to know ethical theories and be able to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. These will include; • Situation Ethics • Natural Law • Utilitarianism • Kant’s Moral Law Students will be expected to analyze the application of the ethical theories to personal, societal, and global issues such as • Sexual ethics e.g. polyamorous relationships or sex outside marriage • Environmental ethics e.g. animal rights or poverty  Medical ethics e.g. genetics and euthanasia ~ Crime and punishment e.g. capital punishment • Ethics of War and Peace e.g. pacifism or a Just War  The use of technology vs protection of human rights • Business ethics e.g. Fair Trade  Students will be expected to show how ethical decisions can be made by applying principles from the ethical theories. Students will examine and evaluate concepts of free will and determinism. Philosophy of Religion a) Arguments for the existence of God Students will be expected to know three philosophical arguments that attempt to prove the existence of God and be able to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. These include the (i) Cosmological (ii) Teleological arguments and (iii) Ontological arguments b) Challenges to religious belief Students will be expected to be able to explain the challenge of evil and suffering to belief in God and know the explanations offered by the Augustinian and Irenaan theodicies. Students will explore the thinking of Freud and Jung on the psychology of religion. Students will consider the impact of developments in the secular world on religion. c) Religious Experience Students will be expected to know different types of religious experience and evaluate the challenges to belief in miracles. d) Religious Language Students will be expected to identify the role and function of religious language and evaluate its’ inherent problems. A Study of a Religion Students will study the religion of Buddhism focusing on: • Religious figures and sacred texts & Religious concepts and religious life • Significant social and historical developments in religious thought • Buddhist practices that shape religious identity Religious Studies has become a very diverse area of study, particularly with the introduction of ethics that leads students to challenge and question responses to key moral and ethical issues that impact on our society. Consequently, as a humanities subject, it provides a sound academic basis for further education and also equips students with a wide variety of skills demanded in many areas of employment. For example, from the vocational professions such as medicine and teaching, to retail, banking, or law.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English and Maths. Grade 6/B in RS and grade 6/B or above in English.

How you'll be assessed

Three external papers of 2 hours will be set for each assessment unit. The papers will consist of two sections of structured essay questions and candidates will be required to answer two questions, one from each section. All questions will test ‘Knowledge and Understanding’ (20 marks) and ‘Evaluative Skills’ (30 marks). Component 1: A Study of a Religion: Buddhism. Component 2: Philosophy of Religion. Component 3 Religion and Ethics.
