Course summary

This course is ideal for learners who would like a more hands-on way of studying Psychology. Applied Psychology involves exploring different psychological approaches to understanding human behavior. You will be able to conduct your research project as part of coursework. You will gain an understanding of gender identity, aggression, how we process information, brain structure, and the links to behavior. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognized by higher education providers as contributing to admission requirements to many relevant applied psychology courses. Combined with other relevant qualifications, you could progress onto degree courses such as Occupational Health, Child Psychology, and Sport Psychology.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above. Plus a grade 4 in the relevant subject area. You will need grade 4/C in English, grade 4/C in Maths and grade 4/C in science in order to start the BTEC course.

How you'll be assessed

In the first year, you will be assessed twice, once in January and once in May. Each exam is 1 hour 30 minutes long and includes a range of short and longer exam questions asking students to apply their knowledge to new case studies. In year 2 the assessment includes 2 pieces of coursework assessed by the teacher. Unit 1: Psychological Approaches and Applications (externally assessed). Here you will learn about four of the main approaches in Psychology including the assumptions that they make. In addition, you will consider explanations for aspects of Psychology such as Conformity, Memory, Social Learning theory and the role Genes play in our behaviour. Lastly you will apply knowledge to issues such as aggression, gender and the psychology of business. Unit 2: Health Psychology (externally assessed). Here you will learn about explanations for various types of addiction including gambling and shopping addiction, how to treat and manage conditions like stress and addiction as well as consider theories that promote behavioural change. Unit 3: Conducting Psychological Research. You will have the opportunity to design and conduct your research. You will also spend time reviewing the research processes as well as considering the implications of your research findings on wider society. Unit 4: Forensics Psychology (internally assessed). In this unit, you will review the different theories of why people commit crimes and what we can do to change criminals' behaviour. You will also have the opportunity to produce your profile of an offender.
