Course summary
Biology is a demanding but fulfilling course. Throughout, you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of scientific processes in a theoretical and practical context. You will study Edexcel Advanced GCE Biology A (9BN0), studying 8 topics over two years. In your first year topics will include the cardiovascular system, gene expression and protein synthesis, and structures of biological molecules. In year two, you will progress on to ecology, photosynthesis, immunity, microbiology, respiration, and the nervous system. You will develop your skills by completing a range of practical competencies, together with 18 core practical experiments. These will count towards a separate Science Practical Endorsement. Biology is a facilitating subject. Choosing facilitating subjects at A Level leaves open a wide range of options for Post-18 choices. It is a requirement for those who want to study Biological Sciences, Ecology, Genetics, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Midwifery, Neuroscience, Nursing, Physiology, Radiography & Zoology at degree level. A Level of Biology is also preferred but not essential for studying Pharmacology and Medicine. An A Level in Biology can lead to many career opportunities.
