A Level English Language and Literature introduces you to a range of literary texts - prose books, scripts and poetry, and non-literary texts from different time periods, social attitudes, and cultures such as webpages, advertisements, and blogs. The course gives you the opportunity to develop independent approaches and to undertake individual, paired and group work, debates, and a mini teach. This develops critical understanding in analyzing the ways in which structure, form, and language shape meaning, evaluating the significance of contextual factors in a range of different texts.
5 GCSEs grade 9/A*-4/C including English Language, English Literature and Maths. You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project, prior to enrolment, to prepare you for A Level English Language and Literature.
This is a two-year linear A Level where you are examined on the whole syllabus at the end of the second year. Each project is assessed as a portfolio of work. The course is assessed by two examinations at the end of the year and a piece of independent study in the form of coursework. To prepare for external exams, you will carry out a program of weekly tests, exam-style assessments, and Formal Progress Points where you will monitor your attendance, how hard you are working, and your academic progress. All Year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway that will allow them to progress to Year 2.
