An A Level in German builds on the foundations of GCSE while deepening students’ understanding of issues affecting German-speaking countries. German A Level is therefore much more than its linguistic component. It is also an enhanced study of many social sciences, often through the medium of film and literary texts. Our chosen text is international-bestseller ‘Der Vorleser,’ and our film, the Oscar-winning ‘Das Leben der Anderen.’ German language skills are in high demand in the UK job market, partly given the status of German as the most widely spoken mother tongue in Europe. Multi-national companies are constantly searching for staff with the ability to converse with their German counterparts and employees who use languages in their work earn an average of 8% more than those who do not. Additionally, a wider range of degree courses are available to you given that a foreign language can be coupled with another subject; such as English and German, History and German, Engineering with German, International Relations, Business with German and International Law.
- Minimum of 6 grade at GCSE German - Grade 5 in English and Maths PLUS at least 3 other GCSE grades 5 or above
Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing • Written exam: 2h 30 Paper 2: Writing • Written exam: 2h • 1 text and 1 film or 2 texts Paper 3: Speaking • Individual research project • Oral exam 21-23 minutes
