Course summary

This course aims to give students the opportunity to develop their evaluative and analytical skills, as well as nurture their ability to think critically. Students will be encouraged to expand their abilities to analyse arguments of all forms of belief, both philosophical and religious. Paper 1: Philosophy of Religion Learners will study topics such as ancient philosophical influences about the mind, body and soul and arguments about the existence or non- existence of God. Students will examine philosophical language and thought. Paper 2: Religion and Ethics Learners will study topics such as normative ethical theories and the application to euthanasia and business along with modern day developments in ethical thought regarding sexual ethics. Paper 3: Developments in Christian Thought Learners will study topics such as the Christian beliefs regarding the nature of humanity, teachings and ideas about human life, the world and life after death. This will involve an investigation into the place of Christianity today in a multi religious and secular society along with an in-depth study of changing views of gender and gender roles on Christian thought and practice

Entry requirements

Standard entry requirements: 5 GCSEs graded at 4 or above (counting 2 BTECs maximum). A grade 4 in English or Maths The normal entry requirements apply for an advanced course, students must also have English or Religious Studies at grade 5.

How you'll be assessed

The exam for each of the three papers will take the form of structured essay questions which will test both knowledge and evaluation. Each paper will last for 2 hours.
