Course summary

This course will develop your theoretical knowledge of a range of topics and all of the lessons are theory based. However, you will also be assessed practically, and this will consist of you performing as a player or coach in one practical activity. You will also develop your understanding of a sport by completing an analysis of your performance and a project researching the provision and development of that activity. In theory lessons, you will gain an understanding of: anatomy, physiology, movement analysis, skill acquisition, sport psychology and sport history and sociology.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirements apply for an advanced course, including a grade 5 or above in combined science. Additionally, a grade 5 or above at GCSE PE, or a merit grade at BTEC Sport level 2 is also required. Pupils will need to perform in one sport in order to be practically assessed. Passion & ability within sport is crucial for applicants. If these criteria are not met, a formal interview will be conducted by the PE department to assess your ability to successfully complete the course.

How you'll be assessed

The A Level course is assessed over 4 components. Components 1 & 2 are externally assessed through examination papers of 2 hours respectively. Unit 3 is internally assessed & externally moderated. This is an assessment of your practical performance in one practical activity from the list set by AQA. Component 4 will be internally assessed & externally moderated & will consist of a written piece of work that analyses your practical performance & explains ways in which improvement can occur.
