Course summary

Consolidating the student's knowledge from middle school. Students have had differing experiences of similar subjects such as English Literature. This introductory course focuses on teaching key language and exposing students to film outside of Hollywood. To contextualise the knowledge needed to access the rest of the course. Both topics are taught chronologically to aid with this (Britain is taught thematically later). This builds upon knowledge acquired at GCSE if they studied film. This introductory course focuses on teaching key language and exposing students to film outside of Hollywood. The students are exposed to foreign films and start to develop extensive analyses of key elements. Context: The Spanish Civil war and atrocities committed by the far right. Criticisms of religion. “The disappeared” in Argentina. Documentary film. The students develop practical filmmaking skills including script writing, camera work and digital editing. Britain: Clear focus on change and continuity, important context for Thatcher case study. Focus on Ao2 as part of Thatcher study – Historiography and interpretation. Also, preparation for coursework where similar skills are used (taught alongside Holocaust Introduction to help students see the “bigger picture” skills can be referred to by their other class teacher.
