What do you call the remote control in your house? The clicker? The zapper? The doofah? How do you pronounce the word, ‘bath’? Is it with a long ‘a’ or a short ‘a’? Do you like to spend time with your galdem or mandem on the weekends? Our country is full of different varieties of English and you are invited to explore the Grime-influenced sociolect of Multicultural London English; enjoy the slower paced, ‘dreckly’ regional dialect of Cornwall and perfect those ‘t’ consonants whilst brushing up on Received Pronunciation. Not only will you study the differences between standard and non-standard English, but you will also explore the language of politics, sports commentaries, television chat shows and interviews. You will also have the chance to learn the conventions of and produce fiction and non-fiction writing. These are some of the forms that we cover: restaurant reviews, travel writing, newspaper and magazine articles, spy thrillers and dystopian worlds. Finally, you will produce your own Language Investigation. This NEA is worth 20% of your final grade. You will explore a topic of your own interest as well as practising university standard writing and referencing.
- Grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language. - General entry requirement: 5 GCSEs grade 4+ including Maths and English
