Sociology is the study of people in their daily lives in places such as education, the workplace and family. Sociologists seek to understand how people think and behave and what factors affect their actions. Sociologists study a range of issues in society including family, social class, poverty, gender, media, religion and crime. What will you study: Throughout the course you will look at the following topics in detail: • Education • Methods in context • Theory and Methods • Family • Media • Crime You will consider different sociological perspectives and apply these to the different social institutes. Throughout the course you will consider themes such as inequality, socialisation, culture, identity, power and stratification.
- You will need at least a grade 5 in English, Maths and a Humanities subject. Sociology will require you to learn a lot of new terminology and material. It is important that you keep on top of your work to be successful. Written communication is essential in Sociology as you will be required to produce extended writing essays under the timed examination conditions. - Seven GCSEs to include at least five at grade 5 or above including English and Maths.
The Course will last 2 years with grades being accredited in the summer of the second year. Each exam paper is 2 hours long and will involve a mixture of short answer and long response questions. Paper 1: Education with Theory and Methods. Paper 2: Topics in Sociology. Paper 3: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods.
