Course summary

It is difficult to have any perspective on the events in the news, or indeed on our current political system, in a vacuum. The study of history broadens horizons and increases empathetic understanding of groups and individuals in the past. It is a rigorous and traditional A-level subject that is very highly regarded by all universities, as well as being fascinating to study for its own sake. Component 1 – Breadth Study: The Tudors 1485-1603 This option allows students to study in breadth issues of change, continuity, cause, and consequence in this period through the following key questions: • How effectively did the Tudors restore and develop the powers of the monarchy? • Why and with what results were there so many changes to the Church and religious practice? • How serious a threat was posed to Tudor monarchs by opposition and rebellion? • How far and why were England’s relations with foreign powers changed? • How important was the role of key individuals and groups and how were they affected by developments? Part One: Consolidation of the Tudor Dynasty: England, 1485–1547 Part Two: England, 1547–1603: Turmoil and Triumph Component 2 - Depth Study: France in Revolution 1774-1815 This option explores what is the birth of the modern world via the explosive and fascinating French Revolution and Napoleon Bonaparte’s subsequent attempts to bring Europe to its knees.
