Course summary

BTEC Sport and Exercise Science is a great qualification that gives learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin sport and exercise science in a contextualised way to prepare them for further study or training at a higher level. The BTEC units provide opportunities during the teaching and learning phase to give students practice in developing employability skills. Throughout the course they will be tasked with developing and in some units will be assessed in these skills: • Cognitive and problem-solving skills e.g. where learners are required to undertake simulated activities and consultancies or clinical fitness testing • Intrapersonal skills: for example, client interviews and observations, presenting to groups through PowerPoint delivery and coaching. • Interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development In terms of the business world, the BTEC prepares pupils for further study in sports psychology, physiotherapy, sports and exercise science, coaching, management, business and leisure. Our students have enjoyed further study in these fields at universities such as Loughborough, Newcastle Learners study 8 Units with the following content: • Exercise and Sports Physiology • Functional Anatomy • Applied Sports Psychology • Field and Laboratory-based fitness testing • Applied Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Science • Coaching for performance and fitness • Physical Activity for individuals and group-based exercise • Sports massage

Entry requirements

Successful candidates will be invited to interview and offers made are conditional on achieving at least four Grade 7/A at GCSE. At this stage, we will also ask for a reference from the pupil’s current school. Prerequisites are a 6 in GCSE PE or a 6 in the sciences. It is not essential to have done GCSE PE to take it at the BTEC level if learners have a genuine interest in the subject and the sciences.

How you'll be assessed

There are 6 mandatory units, three external and 3 internal and two optional units. Learners must complete and achieve a Pass grade or above in all mandatory external units and achieve a Pass or above in all mandatory internal units. Externally Assessed Units Learners will be required to sit two exams and 1 case study paper set by the awarding body Edexcel, these are all marked externally. Unit 1 – Sport and Exercise Physiology (120GLH) 1-hour 30-minute traditional exam paper. Unit 2 – Functional Anatomy (90GLH) 1-hour 30-minute exam paper. Unit 3 – Psychology (120 GLH) 3-hour paper based on a case study. You will sit 2 external papers (units 2 & 3) in year 1 and unit 1 in January of Year 2. These are timetabled to give you a chance to re-sit if you need to. The highest overall grade counts towards your final points allocation. Internally Assessed Units Internally assessed units are projects which have been written by Edexcel. You will be given an assignment brief which explains the tasks you must complete to achieve the criteria. At the beginning of each unit, you will be given the Unit Content and the Assessment Criteria.
