Economics is a living, breathing and constantly changing subject that offers many new perspectives on the modern world - from Karl Marx to John Maynard Keynes. An understanding of economics is essential in making sense of the world we live in today. This can be on a micro level e.g. which job offer to accept, where to live, what to buy or the bigger questions - why we have poverty, how can government best tackle global warming or the illegal drug trade and what might be the best economic levels to pull to ensure a healthy, fairer and environmentally sustainable society. If you have ever wanted to know answers to these questions then economics provides you with a road map.
No prior knowledge of Economics is assumed for this course but a top grade in Mathematics (I)GCSE is desirable. While numerical ability is an advantage, it is by no means essential to being successful in Economics at A Level. For those who wish to pursue Economics at University, however, it is essential that pupils have at least A Level Mathematics if they later want to read for a single honours degree in Economics.
