Course summary

The course involves a range of practical and folder-based work focusing on ceramics, sculpture , exhibition design, design for theatre, television and film, interior design, product design, environmental and architectural design, jewellery/body ornament, 3D digital design. You will study both contemporary and traditional design techniques whilst exploring a range of media; learning about a variety of design styles, genres and traditions based around both European and non-European examples. In the first year we use the skills and techniques learned to create two prototypes based on the study of designers, processes and materials. There is an opportunity to create work by hand and CAD/CAM, and using various software on the computer, whilst theoretical work and experimental techniques are recorded in sketchbooks. What it can lead to: Geography can lead to a huge variety of careers including; environmental lawyer, tourism officer, transport planner, landscape architect, sustainability consultant, town planner, GIS officer, cartographer, land surveyor, disaster and emergency planner, climate change analyst, meteorologist, air pollution analyst, coastal engineer.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in Design & Technology. Students should have studied Resistant Materials GCSE, however students with Graphic Products or Textiles GCSEs will find the course accessible. All students with a strong interest in the subject will be considered
